When we think about advanced civilizations, it’s easy to imagine spaceships, futuristic cities, or aliens from science fiction. But astronomers have a much more interesting way of thinking about technological progress: the Kardashev Scale.

Proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, the Kardashev Scale classifies civilizations based on how much energy they can harness.

Type I Civilization: Able to use all the energy available on its home planet.

Type II Civilization: Able to harness the energy of its entire star. One theoretical way to do this is by building a Dyson Sphere—a vast network of satellites or structures that surround a star and capture much of its energy.

Type III Civilization: Able to utilize the energy of an entire galaxy.

One thing I found surprising is that humanity hasn’t reached Type I yet. Scientists estimate that we are currently around Type 0.7, meaning we still rely on only a fraction of the energy available on Earth.

The idea of a Dyson Sphere is especially fascinating to me. Although no one has ever observed one, astronomers have searched for possible signs of these hypothetical megastructures by looking for stars that emit unusual amounts of infrared radiation. If a civilization were advanced enough to build something like a Dyson Sphere, it would completely change our understanding of what intelligent life is capable of achieving.

The original Kardashev Scale includes only Types I, II, and III. However, some scientists and science fiction writers have imagined even more advanced civilizations:

  • Type IV: Capable of harnessing the energy of the entire universe.
  • Type V: Able to access the energy of multiple universes, if a multiverse exists.
  • Type VI: A hypothetical civilization that could manipulate the fundamental structure of reality itself, including space, time, and even the laws of physics.

These higher levels are purely speculative, but they remind us just how vast the possibilities of the universe might be.

Every time I set up my telescope or process an astrophotography image, I’m reminded that every star I see could have its own planetary system. The Kardashev Scale makes me wonder not only whether other civilizations exist, but also how far they may have progressed—and what humanity might become millions of years from now.
